What a nervous feeling i have knowing how much more has gone into this. I pray it goes well and that all Jaycees have the opportunity to learn and have fun!

Checklist is long: oynd, speakers, entertainment, hotel rooms, national guests and trainers, parade, competition, first timers, agenda's, awards, meals, presents, prizes, socials, and fun! Whew! What have i missed?!

Gotta run...enjoy the blog!Pat Grocehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08085854027091722532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586168651640543278.post-83994884759636026232008-04-03T06:12:00.001-07:002008-04-03T06:27:06.779-07:00Get 'er Done!Ever have the problem getting to things you said you would do? Often I find myself setting at my desk to do a task on my pc only to find myself reading email, responding, or viewing a website. Here are my tips to keep on task and get work done:

1) Know you outcome. Have a goal and complete the goal. Even simple tasks like washing the truck need a start, middle, and ending without interruption.

2)Take away the distractions. Radio, tv, ipod, cell phone can be turned off. Let your mind do the wandering - don't let other things wander it for you!

3) Give yourself time. Often i think i can accomplish all my daily goals in one hour. Not! Better time management leads to better results.

4) Do not let others control your schedule. Let others know your plans and ask politely to reschedule. Some people do everything ad-hoc and expect you to be the same. Instead set your own expectations and get others to accomodate you.

5) Allow time for a quick reward. For me this usually involves a trip to TCBY (just down the block) or a cold one from the fridge. Amen brother!

Productivity happens when you commit yourself to a task!Pat Grocehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08085854027091722532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586168651640543278.post-28879439220750079302008-03-25T06:35:00.000-07:002008-03-25T06:57:12.743-07:00National Convention in MemphisIf you ever wonder "What is jaycees all about?" you need to do no more than attend a national convention. Let's run down the list

1) Leadership training - state presidents training, local officer training, district director training, and more. Pretty much a full day!
2) Diversity training - Ariel Jones is a terrific trainer who lights up the room with enthusiasm. Her training on diversity went into deep detail not only explaining why this topic is important but how to resolve conflicts which arise.
3) Mattitude - motivational speaker who presented ideas on positive attitude, achieving a high altitude of success, and taking action! I have to admit I usually dislike the *rah* *rah* motivational speakers. This was not only motivational it was educational. I left with the sense I could better motivate others using what i learned.
4) Meet with other Jaycees and exchange ideas
5) National awards given to many states, chapters, and individuals who deserve credit for their hard work
6) Competitors from our state and others especially Justin Parkinson's master speak-up winning speach!
7) Stay up late and enjoy the party!

Most of all I got the sense that the US Junior Chamber is on the right track. President Denice and her staff are working toward a simple vision:
"To become the organization of choice for young leaders who seek direction, professional growth, and community involvement."

I saw this vision realized this weekend!Pat Grocehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08085854027091722532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586168651640543278.post-85520312562962244252008-03-11T13:53:00.000-07:002008-03-11T14:07:20.938-07:00Business Writing more than Passionate DebateSo I am back to blogging about jaycees. My sleep schedule after baby arrived is back to normal so I once again am capable of thought. I have been thinking about professional training for the May convention and the competitions. I would like to provide training that can help you get that next job or promotion. Jaycees is about helping build a better you!

Here's my problem - Write Up competition is often about making a case for a passionate topic. I think write-up is a great exercise but the lofty topics chosen don't translate well to the real world. The last time I wrote a passionate letter to a boss or coworker I ended up in his office having to explain what's wrong. Passion isn't a great vehicle for professional written communications.

Over on life-hack is an
article about writing a business letter that gets results. I think its closer to what I have in mind for explaining business writing. Is write-up effective as a competition? Let me know what you think.Pat Grocehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08085854027091722532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586168651640543278.post-69965062471377145912008-03-02T19:17:00.000-08:002008-03-02T19:19:18.722-08:00Anna Lynn Groce is BornHey i know most of you have heard Amy gave birth to our daughter Anna Lynn on february 25th. I have seen it through my job, jaycees, or personally. How its dealt with affects the outcome. I don't think it can be averted but can be minimized. Recognize conflict, measure the impact good or bad, and use strategies to set goals and communicate effectively. President Denice had a presentation on resolving conflict presented at state prresidents training. I would recommend the training to any chapter looking to build professional development training.

Just drop me a note and I would be happy to set something up!

- PatPat Grocehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08085854027091722532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586168651640543278.post-58052622267263335142008-01-25T08:53:00.000-08:002008-01-25T09:05:13.285-08:00Innovate your ChapterDoes your chapter grow? Are members still interested in your projects? Do the projects still have appeal? Those are questions only you can answer. Amy and I had a long but delightful christmas traveing to Fargo, Madison SD, then back to Bismarck. I know I will be getting used to long trips in the Jeep next year to visit all of you! My presents this year featured gift cards to various stores in large amounts. I am hoping all of you like the idea too - I am putting gasoline cards on my incentives list for recruitment this year. Angie is a little disappointed there will not be koosies or beer mugs but its my hope the gas cards will be well received bhy recruiters and new members.

My task list is dwindling down. I have the parade points, plan of action, and january convention training set to go. Shirts and name badges are on order! I am very excited to get the year started!!

Pictures from tennessee are coming keep checking the blog...Pat Grocehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08085854027091722532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7586168651640543278.post-38968774766488934092007-12-17T06:23:00.000-08:002007-12-17T06:37:30.327-08:00ND Jaycee President 1st PostI wanted to start a blog for those jaycees in ND who know me. I was feeling very progressive when i came up with the idea to start this while attending Camp Discovery. I was fortunate to be seated next to a young lady who is state president from New York, Shonda Ranson. She is about the most plugged in person I have ever met - and I have a baqckground in web servers and web development. There are so many social networking tools like myspace, flcikr, youtube, and blogs. I don't mind writing so a blog seemed a good fit to start.

Camp Discovery is in Tennessee, about one hour from nashville, its the location of the state president's training. Speakers were Denice O'Neill (2008 president), John Weber (state presidents coach), and several employees from the national service center. The training was excellent but I really enjoyed meeting the other state presidents. Imagine fourty of the most dedicated, professional, excited jaycees secluded at a summer camp. What fun! I stayed up late many nights talking to the other presidents cultivating ideas to bring home.

I have pictures from camp discovery i will have to post this week. I promise to keep blogging if you keep reading!Pat Grocehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08085854027091722532noreply@blogger.com
